How to create or share your family tree on Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast

If you have purchased Tree Grower and/or Record Keeper – and you are already on Ancestry – follow these instructions:

Please download your existing tree to your computer or phone and then upload it back onto Ancestry in order to create a copy. Call the copy [your surname](myorigins). Please share this tree – along with your original one – with [email protected]. Appoint me as an Editor to both trees for the best results. Your original tree will only be used as a reference point, all modifications will be in the copy. Ancestry’s specific instructions can be found here.

Download your GEDCOM on MyHeritage

You can export a GEDCOM file of your family tree from your family site on MyHeritage.com

Log in to your family site.

Move your mouse cursor over ‘Family tree’ and click on ‘Manage Trees’.

On the page that opens, click on ‘Export to GEDCOM‘ on the right side next to the name of the tree you would like to export. You can then upload your GEDCOM file to Ancestry as per the instructions at the top of the page or here.

Download your GEDCOM on Findmypast

You can export your family tree into a GEDCOM file from Findmypast. You can do this by going to the My Family Tree link at the top of the website and then selecting to view all trees. You will then see all of the family trees that you have created.

  1. Log in to ‘My Account’
  2. Go to the ‘Family Tree’ options on the top left of this page.
  3. Select ‘View all trees’
  4. You’ll see all family trees you have created.
  5. You’ll notice 3 buttons on the right of the screen against each tree “Settings”, Export tree” and “Delete tree”.
  6. Click “Export tree”

The procedure to export to GEDCOM formats from elsewhere varies. The follow steps give general directions.

  1. Start your genealogy program, and open the family tree you want to export.
  2. Click the FILE menu.
  3. Select SAVE AS or EXPORT (Which one depends on the program you are using.) from the menu. A new file window will display.
  4. Select the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
  5. In the SAVE AS TYPE menu, click the GEDCOM or GED selection.
  6. Enter the name of the file in the FILE NAME field.
  7. Click the SAVE button.
  8. If an export confirmation window displays, click the OK button. The family tree is now saved on your computer as a GEDCOM file.

You can then upload your GEDCOM file for free to Ancestry as per the instructions at the top of the page or follow Ancestry’s instructions here.
